Lesson One: The Construction of Freedom
For grades: 7 & 8.
Objective: Students will examine the slave laws passed in Connecticut between 1690 and 1848 to better understand the construction of a slave-holding society in New England.
Lesson Two: Mapping and Moving along the Underground Railroad
For grades 6, 7 & 8.
Objective: The objective of this lesson plan is to have students understand the challenge of escaping to freedom under the guise of secrecy and explore how slaves addressed this challenge with songs and images.
Lesson Three: Word of Mouth--Voices of Abolition
For Grades 6, 7 & 8.
Objective: Students will consider the variety of opposition and proposed solutions to slavery in the United States and will examine the language abolitionists used to frame and promote their cause.
